On 24 April 2014, ACE IT provided training on how to introduce older people to the benefits of new technology to five volunteers and two members of staff including Project Leader, Javed Sattar, from the Minority Ethnic Silver Surfers (MESS) project which is based in Glasgow.
The MESS project is part of the West of Scotland Regional Equality Council and aims to help minority ethnic older people in Glasgow live a more independent life and feel less isolated by ensuring they are able to use technology.
With the assistance of one of our Moose volunteers, appropriate case studies were used to look at the various ways minority ethnic people could benefit from access to the Internet. Barriers to learning were also discussed along with a demonstration of adapted equipment such as large keyboards and a track ball mouse.
Afterwards, course participants commented that the course would “Make a very big difference to the lives of senior citizens” and that ACE IT provided a course that was “very informal, warm and friendly”.
