Moose in the Hoose Coach

Volunteer – Moose in the Hoose Coach

Background

The Moose in the Hoose project started in 2005 as a community outreach project of ACE IT Scotland.

Role purpose

The purpose of this role is to support older people living in care homes to enjoy the benefits of using digital technology as a means of communication, learning and fun!

Specific tasks

Use technology to support the residents in an accessible way.
Find new and interesting ways to engage the residents in activities and learning.
Assist residents to overcome the fear factor and realise that fun can be had from technology in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
Assist residents to use email and video calling to increase their social contacts.

Skills and qualities needed

Essential qualities of this role are:
Understanding of older people and their needs.
Patience and understanding.
Note: This is a regulated activity so an enhanced disclosure will need to be carried out under the PVG scheme, ACE IT will cover the cost of this.

Commitment

We ask you to commit to 2 hours per week as consistency and regular contact are vital both for your initial training and in delivering the service. Sessions take place Monday – Thursday, during the day. After training, we feel volunteers will obtain most out of the experience if they are able to stay for at least 6 months.
You will be expected to take part in learning & development activities throughout the year.

Support and training

Training will be given with an initial basic digital course ensuring that all volunteers will have a similar digital knowledge. Training will also be given on working in a care home setting and on the potential support needs of the residents. Any other relevant training that may be required will be identified and you will be offered this when necessary.
All volunteers will have regular supervision to feedback on progress, discuss future development and air any issues.

What’s in it for me?

Be part of a supportive team, meet new people and build friendships.
