Due to the coronavirus outbreak, we have set up a Tech Library to loan Android tablets to organisations around Edinburgh for older people to borrow. The tablets come already set-up in advance and with a handy guide and step-by-step instructions. They can be borrowed for four weeks at a time, and loans are easily renewed.
If your organisation wants to get involved, contact Katie here.
Case study: Brian
Brian is in his 70s and has suffered from severe depression. He was working with an occupational therapist (OT) to build more routine in his life. He owned an older mobile phone, but had no access to the internet and was very digitally excluded.
Brian began to borrow the tablet for a few days at a time, and quickly learned how to use it independently. He has used it to keep in touch with friends and family over video calling, begun a course with the Open University and has participated in Joe Wicks exercise classes on Youtube. He has also been able to take part in online physio classes, which have formed a central part of his treatment plan.
Brian’s confidence was boosted and he no longer needs daily calls from his OT. His mental health is massively improving as he connects to others and learns online. Technology like this can make a massive difference in the lives of older people!
