Volunteers’ Week 2022: Ishan

Volunteers’ Week 2022: Ishan

Volunteers’ Week runs from 1-7 June every year, and it is a chance to thank all our amazing volunteers here at ACE IT. In 2022, we are highlighting the stories and experiences of some of our volunteers.

Ishan Mishra is a first year student at the University of Edinburgh, and volunteers for ACE IT as a one-to-one digital coach.

Why do you volunteer?

I find it to be a productive break from the everyday hustle and just generally enjoy talking to people.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering with ACE IT?

Helping the learners get through their IT issues. This might seem obvious but personally, nothing is better than seeing the joy on a learner’s face once an issue they have been struggling with for a while is fixed.

What has been your favourite experience while volunteering with ACE IT?

Talking to people! I don’t just mean the learners but also ACE IT staff. The topic of conversation isn’t always about IT, it could be anything. Fun conversations are always amazing – and I’ve had many during my time as a volunteer.

What is the most challenging part of volunteering?

I think explaining concepts in a way which others can understand is not always easy when you are not aware of what the learner already knows or doesn’t know. The level of detail you need for different people varies, and figuring out the sweet spot for a particular person takes some effort from the volunteer’s end. With that being said, I personally find this part fun, although it may take getting used to.
